Toray Recognized for Environmental Accomplishments
Front Royal, VA, March 19, 2009: On Wednesday, March 18th Larry Simmons from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) recognized Toray Plastics (America), Inc. for earning Virginia’s “Exemplary Environmental Enterprise (E3)” designation. The DEQ recognizes organizations with a fully-implemented Environmental Management System (EMS), a commitment to pollution prevention and that demonstrate superior environmental performance. Only 20% of VEEP recipients have earned the E3 designation.
VEEP drives environmental excellence by encouraging facilities within the Commonwealth that have strong environmental records to go above and beyond their legal requirements. As part of their EMS, one of Toray’s objectives is to conserve water by proactive maintenance of leaks, process changes, and technological options. Toray is also working to minimize the amount of solid waste sent to the landfill. Another objective is a waste minimization plan to reduce the quantity and toxicity of waste and a program to reuse tetralin by distilling used tetralin. Toray’s pollution prevention efforts include recycling of cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, office paper, wood pallets, and scrap metal. Toray also completed a warehouse lighting project to reduce energy consumption. Energy efficient lighting was installed in the warehouse and each isle had a motion detector installed to ensure lighting is on only when needed.
Several distinguished guests from the local community were in attendance; Mayor Eugene Tewalt, Town of Front Royal, Mr. Doug Stanley, County Administrator, Ms. Jennifer McDonald, Economic Development Authority, Mr. Steve Burke, Town of Front Royal, and Mr. Michael Graham, Front Royal Town Manager.
Mr. Doug Stanley, County Administrator, said “On behalf of the County I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Toray, Jeff Lippy and the rest of the staff for receiving recognition from DEQ for earning the Virginia’s “Exemplary Environmental Enterprise (E3)” designation. When we recruited Toray to come to our community in 1995 they committed to being a good environmental neighbor. We commend them for continuing to follow through on their promise. Congratulations to everyone involved in achieving this milestone.”
Annually, Toray will be required to show overall improvement in the operations of their EMS and pollution prevention program as well as have no significant compliance issues to stay in the program. These achievements illustrate Toray’s continued commitment to corporate social responsibility.
