Toray Plastics (America), Inc. PEF Division
>> Why would I want Polypropylene (PP) instead of Polyethylene (PE)?
PP offers additional heat stability and strength at elevated temperatures over PE. PP is preferred for today's forming and injection processes used to mold automotive interior panels (Door Panel, Instrumental Panel, etc.).
>> What is the difference between chemistry and IR?
Chemically cross-linked foams generally have larger cell structures and a rougher surface, which ultimately do not produce the same quality and physical properties that can be achieved with irradiation cross-linked foam. On the other hand, irradiation cross-linked foams have very consistent quality and properties in which the cell size of the foam can be made smaller for superior properties and have a smoother surface.
>> Why would I want cross-linked foam?
Cross-linking the foam improves the thermal and physical properties of the material, increasing the heat stability and strength of the foam.
>> How do I choose the right foam?
The most appropriate foam depends on the functionality requirements to the particular molding process or application. Toray foams are engineered for specific processing applications. For example, foam designed for use in a vacuum forming molding process will have different requirements and properties compared to foam intended for use in a LPM (low pressure molding) injection process. Toray can help provide technical recommendations for specific customer applications and processing requirements.
>> I am interested in obtaining a sample of your foam and literature, how can I get a sample?
